“Herbs, Healing and Mythology”

April 12, 2017

April 2017

Back up the mountain, I am more aware and grateful for this new season. The sweep of the landscape is awash with colour and new plant life. Green grass carpets like the Irish Emerald Isle contrast with yellow buttercups and crimson poppies as they sway in the cool breeze of April.

Surrounded by a surge of wild plants and herbs thriving and blooming with abandon.

Herbs and Aromatic plants have been used for thousands of years as natural remedies in healing with many culinary uses. In mythology, they each have a  special significance. The history and folklore around these magical shrubs fascinate me.

As we step into more carefree days of rebirth and renewal- what better way to stay in flow than by growing your favourites.

Challenged with food intolerances since I was a child – in particular, the ‘onion and garlic family’ – Herbs are an essential part of my daily diet both in cooking and baking, for extra flavour and taste.

The individual herbs I use and what they symbolise are:-

Mint: – make fresh as a tea and helps with anxiety

Thyme: – Represents Courage

Oregano: –  Happiness and Joy

Rosemary: – Has been proven to improve Memory and used in remembrance of those passed.

Sage: – Symbolises Success

Lavender: – Represents Love, Devotion, Purity and Loyalty

The colour alone lifts my spirit,  therapeutic, calming and healing

– As it happens my wedding outfit to Super Hero was in shades of Lilac along with my bouquet in shades of purple and cream sweet smelling freshies.

I arrange Lavender flowers in small vases. The perfume envelops each room throughout the house.

I use an organic a mix of natural aromatherapy oils created by Ursula O’ Regan along with her treatments of regular massage and reflexology when in Kent.

Next week: Ursula O’Regan is my Guest Blogger Aromatherapist and Reflexologist.

I look forward to her sharing her vast knowledge to enlighten us on the wonderful health properties and benefits of the Aromatic Lavender. How we can use this regal herb as an Aromatherapy Oil too.
