After the Rains… Insallah A Slow Transition to Summer

May 16, 2016

Oh, how it has rained these last days, my surroundings enveloped in a low grey mist from morning till night.
My neighbours are clapping their hands in delight after a dry and warm winter.
They are still concerned about their seasonal crops and what the harvest will yield.

Life is transient in this part of the world as I have come to learn.
Weather changes, crops are healthy and plentiful one year and perhaps the opposite the following one..
My neighbours take it in their stride…

People come, sometimes they wish to be your new ‘best friend.’ They change and they disappear gone……forever.

I resonate with this wisdom:-

‘People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.’

It’s part of living here.

And so it is for our seasonal swallows.

I know summer has arrived when they appear having flown thousands of miles perhaps from South Africa or the Sahara…. up to 200 miles a day.

They fly solo and in groups through the skies sometimes finding their old nests, taking up residence, becoming part of our bird family….. for awhile.

What a sight in the early evenings just before the sun dips down and sets into a blood orange and amber skyline.
I lie on my back doing Yoga stretches on the lower terrace. In bridge position, I look up and gaze at the vastness of clear blue.
Swirling, swooping in aerobatic formations in and out and around each other, the black and white fork tailed swallows fly through the tall pine trees. It’s their feeding time as they eat flying insects even mosquitos. The open sky is there’s.

Oh to fly high and spread my wings just like them. Free and light as a feather to travel near and far, to return with more tales to write and share with you my audience.

In truth, I may not be able to physically fly but I feel free.
I have come to learn how to spread my wings in this piece of paradise, to find my nesting place.

I am grateful for each and every day. The swallows remind me of where I have come from and how free I am as I fly to my next destination- writing Volume 2 in the Tales from Turkey series.
Unlike the swallows, I am here to stay in this calm, peaceful environment inspired to write for many seasons to come….
