I first wrote this poem in 2002 when I was hugely challenged with health and sleep. It still resonates with me today. My hope: It reaches out to others.
Nobody knows what it’s like,
Lying awake for half the night,
You toss and turn,
You cannot sleep,
You get up to read or write,
Maybe drink some soothing potion,
But still, sleep does not come
Nobody knows what it’s like
Your eyelids heavy,
Your brain fuzzy
You pace the floor
Then read some more,
Go online, send some email,
All the while, remaining calm,
And still, sleep does not come
Nobody knows what it’s like
Irritated, anxious
How long will it be before
you can close your eyes with ease
Slowly feel slumber take over,
Trying not to wake your mate
As he, heavy in sleep
Snores, oh how he snores,
You watch for the first signs
Of morning light,
You hear the dawn chorus,
as you still lie awake,
Nobody knows what it’s like
You try to carry on
To face another day, cranky
in a fog, everything aches
And again as night time comes round,
You want to scream and shout
Please, oh, please, carry me away to
drift down into the deepest of rest
and sleep
Nobody knows what it’s like
