Fairway Market Store
Thanks to our foodie and learned friend Harriet and her knowledge on all things New York City, we discovered ‘Fairway Market Store’ on Upper Westside, originally set up in 1933 as a family run business. Of course it has changed and grown since those first heady days where customers would travel for miles around New York to buy their food.
Their USP:-
‘WORLD’S GREATEST FOOD STORE’
In 2004, Fairway Market was named as one of the most important specialty food retailers by The Gourmet Retailer.
What a corner shop to have in your neighbourhood, the higher echelons of food heaven. We made our way into this gastronomic delight that stays open until 1.00am seven days a week.
It reaches out to everyones’ food requirements and dietary needs.
Floor upon floor, a sacred food temple, even one dedicated to organic food.
The best quality home made bread sourced locally, some baked on site with a wafting aroma. Fresh wet fish counters, meat, cheeses, cakes, desserts, wines, coffee beans and so much more, are all stocked here.
Fairway in their words is famous for their ‘sprawling gourmet and upscaled prepared food.’
Their piled high fresh produce reminds me of my Sunday Turkish or Kent Farmer’s markets.
I am impressed and excited to be here.
Fruit, herbs and vegetables that are grown in and around New York:-
Apples, plums, pears, tasting like real juicy fresh fruit in season are on display.
Eventually, we walk up to the top floor with the warmest of New York welcome’s into their skylight restaurant.
Living with food intolerances, finding a restaurant that serves a great combo of salad ingredients is a dream. This restaurant/cafe and the staff got it right.
Our waitress organised my fave ingredients served with a freshly hot seared salmon steak on top.
Super Hero enjoyed his fresh lobster roll, (on menus all across NYC) raving about this particular one for days after.
A freshly baked brioche filled with chunky pieces of lobster, mayo, sprinkled with a dusting of chilli pepper.
Fairway encourages their customers to explore, sample, taste and linger.
You can lock me away for a few days or more in this store, where I will happily amble
at my leisure from aisle to aisle, from floor to floor.
Sadly we were not able to return on a daily basis to buy and savour more.
I have decided that on my next visit to NYC, I shall rent an apartment close by, to enjoy more of this ‘go to gastro food emporium.’
