Newly arrived in New York City, Harriet, our American friend immediately took us under her wing.
Harriet shared her vast knowledge of the most cultural and financial city in the world. Walking through Upper West Side we spent magical hours immersing ourselves in the buildings of this quieter part of town.
The superb architecture featured here was originally named the historical Dorilton Hotel.
It was one of the first palatial style hotels built between 1900-1902. Visually stunning, sculpted in a way similar to the exteriors of many French palaces, it was declared a New York City landmark in 1974. It has since developed into luxurious apartments. We even met one of its residents, a ninety-something feisty lady who has lived in this regal building for over27 years. She animatedly shared many of her stories.

This is the only apartment block in New York with lifts big enough to transport a grand piano. Readers and Listeners, I could happily have stayed awhile, to enjoy
Readers and Listeners, I could happily have stayed awhile, to enjoy life as the single Carrie Bradshaw from the series ‘Sex and The City.’ I would spend my days peering out of my window, in between feeling fired up with inspiration to write. My social life would soar, wearing her fabulous clothes, shoes and bags living in her studio apartment on this side of Manhattan spending time with her friends, eating brunch in some trendy restaurant at weekends. Sharing cocktails and man gossip in the jam-packed must hang out bar with other fabulous young things. Madly in love with Big, we spend romantic nights
together hoping the chemistry never wanes.
My novella based on my first adventures and experiences as an Irish Woman in New York is a bestseller with a grand launch in a media frenzy. Millions of copies sold out in the first week, of course, a contract to develop the book into a film is on the table, Sarah Jessica Parker as my proposed leading actress.
And then I awake to cars honking their horns, garbage trucks bumping along over the hissing manholes and fire engines roaring.
But I am in New York and it’s okay because here anything can happen.
