As millions of people write and send their Christmas cards, breaking the backs of posties the world over, millions still pick up their pens to write personal messages in their cards. Why?

It seems we still adore receiving a personalised message through the post no matter how convenient e-cards appear to be.

The Christmas card I received last year that stole my attention was one which surprised me. It was a small card, with a ‘Santa hat wearing hamster’ on the front. Inside was a message ‘Dear Liz and family, we think of you all fondly and wish you all the best. With love this Christmas…’

The words were simple yet touching and stayed with me. So what will you write in your cards this year? Merry Christmas or Happy Christmas?

Do you mention New Year? Are you someone who includes a short (or long!) family letter and do you let your toddlers scrawl red, green and gold crayon on the inside?

Or, like so many others, do you simply sign your name due to the sheer volume of cards you send out?

This is the time of year for communication so why not add a little Christmas magic? For those who are not wordsmiths, quote from others. Some beautiful and funny Christmas quotes I have come across are below:-

“Christmas is a tonic for our souls. It moves us to think of others rather than of ourselves. It directs our thoughts to giving.”
B.C Forbes

“Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.”
Dr. Seuss
“

“The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.”
George Carlin

If you want inspirational quotes for the New Year, Miriam McGuirk’s new Pocket Book ‘Shattered Dreams & Scorpions at Midnight – A Pocketful of Inspiration’ has dozens to choose from including “No matter where we go, what makes us special always makes us special.” Fantastically inspiring words to start the New Year with.

There is a power in written communication to make us laugh, reflect, acknowledge and learn and once we realise how well this may work at Christmas time, why restrict this positive flow of communication?

So, from the humble Christmas card we can learn a philosophy to live our lives by – particularly in the fast paced world of work. Website copy, e-mails, newsletters, blogs, interviews and articles all influence us when we read them, so when penning written communication yourself, why not change the way you communicate?

Use the written word more to your advantage and reach new audiences.

Let’s make 2017 the year of the written word! Embrace the world of words and turn your marketing material around.

But be warned: although discovering a new world of communication can be exhilarating, including your enthusiastic ‘contrafribularites’ in any press releases you send out is best to be avoided, leave that to Blackadder…

A Happy Christmas of Communicating to each of you.

Liz White.
